In the heart of the historic centre of San Salvador, the square Gerardo Barrios (also known as Plaza Cívica) was the theatre of the event which had gathered 350 000 people for the funeral of Monsignor Romero in 1980. This grouping had been repressed by the government and the day after the funeral, many pairs of shoes lost in the chaos of the protesters'fleeing the ground… and the body of some. Today, a bronze bronze statue in honour of Gerardo Barrios (President of El Salvador in 1858 for three months only and one of the instigators of Central American unity).
