The Puerto Cabezas region is called Bilwi by the Sumus natives, actually Mayagnas. Bilwi is an increasingly popular name, derived from bil (snake) and wil (banana leaf). It's the land of adventure par excellence, even more so than Bluefields, its wilderness sister further south. Very few tourists make the effort to go there. However, all returning travelers are enchanted by the hundreds of kilometers of jungles, forests, rivers and lagoons. Magnificent excursions can be made inland to the Miskitos villages, Waspán, the Karatá lagoon or the Coco and Waspuk ríos.
