ESTADIO NACIONAL DENNIS MARTÍNEZ
Dennis Martínez National Stadium is mainly used for the Nicaraguan Baseball Championship (national sport), but there are also football matches (sport becoming increasingly popular), concerts, and some religious events. As you will have understood, it is mainly the place of appointment of Nicaraguans at weekends for major sporting and cultural events. Built in 1948, it can accommodate up to 30 000 spectators. His original name was simply Estadio Nacional, but following the earthquake of 1972 he was renamed Anastasio Somoza García, and during the takeover of the Sandinistas seven years later, he was renamed Rigoberto López Pérez (the name of the man who murdered Somoza, a symbol). In 1998, for his fiftieth birthday, the stadium was finally renamed with his current name, Dennis Martínez, the first Nicaraguan baseball player to play in MLB.
