Akershus is home to a medieval castle dating from the 13th century, remodelled in the first half of the 17th century in Renaissance style. Although the walls of the fortress house the Museum of the Resistance and the medieval castle of Christian IV, it is mainly for its lawns that people come to Akershus. The museum, housed in a beautiful 17th century half-timbered building, documents the course of World War II in Norway. Several exhibitions of photographs, original documents and objects explain the situation in the country during the occupation.
