AGUADIR

Twenty kilometers from Ouadane, on the track leading to Guelb er-Rîchât, stands the small fort of Aguadir. Built of banco with four towers, it is thought to have been erected around five centuries ago by Portuguese merchants trading in gum. The fort was subsequently attacked several times, notably by the Moroccans, as it was located on the road to Timbuktu. Nevertheless, it remains in relatively good condition, although no serious excavations have been undertaken here, despite the suspected presence of pottery remains.
