The Sagalil dam may not be a must-see on your trip to Mauritania, but the scenery is well worth the (small) detour. The area has the advantage of giving you access to a slightly cooler zone, thanks to the reservoir. It's surprising to see so much water all at once, in the middle of such arid plains. The valley has been flooded since the construction of the country's2nd largest dam, due to open in 2019. The dam is designed to provide a seasonal water supply for the local population and to irrigate the region's oases.
