On the track that leads from Nbeika to Matmata, some 25 km in length, a few kilometers before Matmata, you'll come across a dozen astonishing little constructions, each about 1.5 meters high, on your left. These are granaries, still in use today, said to have been built by the Gangari farmers who inhabited the region some 2,000 years ago. They appear to have been the ancestors of the Soninke. These cylindrical stone constructions, erected near ancient cultivated areas, enabled them to store seeds.
