At the moment, the first port of Yemen, Iz is on the way to being supplanted by that of Aden for its containers. The city has 450 000 inhabitants. Founded in the th century, Iz really grew only in the th century during the second Ottoman occupation. As the capital of the Zaraniq tribe, Iz had to undergo bombings twice: in 1911, by the Italians at war against Turkey, then in 1915 by the English who then occupied the city between 1919 and 1921. The modern port was built by the Soviet Union at the request of Imam Ahmed. In 1987-1988, a French company built in Ras Katib the port of the high seas and modernised existing port facilities. At the end of 1990, the population grew sharply, with the arrival of the Yemeni people expelled from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait at the beginning of the Gulf War. In this city of concrete, the Yemeni style only remains the «qamareyas», stained glass windows above the windows.
