Tem come from all over the country to pay homage to the Prophet Mohamed and dance with sharp knives, without hurting themselves.
The festival of the knives. An initiatory festival whose origin goes back to the Semassi warriors who demonstrated their power and valour by submitting to tests of strength. To celebrate the birth of the prophet Mohamed, the Tem people perform a very singular dance with sharp knives. The initiates cut all the parts of the body without hurting themselves, to show their power to the adversary if he should provoke them. This traditional ceremony takes place in December or August, depending on the Tabaski festival.
