Chimoio is pretty damn perched. Just take a look at the barometer - the air is cooler - and the green hills. In summer it's nice; in winter it's better to be warmly dressed. The fifth largest city in the country, it is a must-see stop between Tete and Beira, and it is also the way to Zimbabwe (Mutare). Walking around Chimoio, you will see some colonial houses, including the 1920 wooden one at the corner of Mossurize and Barue streets. The market is right next door. Don't miss the climb to the top of Cabeça do Velho ("old man's head"), which can be seen from below. During the rainy season, it looks like it is crying. During this time, you can see baboons and colorful lizards. Lodging in Chimoio is expensive compared to the comfort offered. We have listed the few modest pensions that are acceptable, because the most expensive hotels (in the 100 US$ per room) - Castelo Branco and Inter-Chimoio - are poorly kept.
