MAGDALENSBERG ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
Archaeological site east of Sankt Veil featuring excavations including mosaics, temple foundations and public baths.
7 km from Sankt Veit, the Magdalensberg archaeological site bears witness to the earliest Roman occupation north of the Alps (1st century BC). Although a statue was unearthed as early as 1502, exploration of the site only began at the end of the 19thcentury and excavations in 1948. Mosaics and the foundations of a temple and public baths can be seen. Starting point for the Four Hills race in April (50 km and 1,800 m ascent!), an ancient pilgrimage of atonement.
