ART FORUM (KUNSTFORUM)
The Forum d'art, opposite the Palais Ferstel, is a remarkable art exhibition space with outstanding retrospectives.
Opposite the Ferstel Palace, the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien, sponsored by the Bank of Austria, occupies a sumptuous building erected between 1914 and 1921 to house... a bank. It was refurbished as an art center in 1980 and, since 2012, has also housed the Constitutional Court. The Kunstforum attracts some 300,000 visitors a year. Its huge exhibition halls are devoted to classical modernism and the post-war avant-garde. Spectacular temporary exhibitions have been programmed around great artists such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Cézanne, Picasso or van Gogh, as well as Balthus, Kahlo, Toulouse-Lautrec... In addition, there are carefully curated thematic exhibitions that always attract great interest. Contemporary art is also becoming increasingly important. Since 2005, the "Trésor", a former vault, has been showcasing young international artists. As you enter, you admire the golden sphere of the world above the entrance porch, with two modern-style columns on either side. This is a remarkable art exhibition space known for its landmark retrospectives. In 2024, an exhibition of works by Roberto Matta (1911-2002) took place. From October 3, 2024, to January 19, 2025, the Kunstforum Wien will present a highly anticipated exhibition of works by Paul Gauguin.
On the square, the Austria Fountain , erected in 1846, is an allegory of the empire at its apogee, with 4 figures evoking its 4 great rivers: Danube, Elbe, Po and Vistula.
