The city of Bardejov, by its status as a royal city, was for a long time forbidden to the Jewish community. From 1800 onwards, a community settled west of the fortified town. At numbers 6 and 7 of the rue du Moulin (Mlynska Ulica) is the old synagogue, built in 1836. Next to this synagogue, the buildings that contained the ritual baths and the Jewish school are now used as shops. The Jewish population made up about 40% of the total population of Bardejov before its extermination during the Second World War.
