FORTRESS (PEVNOST)

The imposing fortress of Komárno is the largest fortification system in Central Europe. Originally, it was a bastion built in the 13th century and gradually expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries, then in the 19th century, after its partial destruction by the 1783 earthquake. The fortress, built on a classic plan, has little to show, but you can always take a detour if you are fond of military architecture. It remains the most emblematic monument of the city of Komárno.
