The cathedral is divided into three parts. The oldest part is a Romanesque rotunda dating from the 9th and 13th centuries, to the right of the church entrance. The upper part was built at the beginning of the 16th century, restored and modified in baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1663, the Ottomans took the city and transformed the cathedral into a mosque. Recent archaeological finds confirm the presence of a church dating from the 7th century.
