TEATRO PICCOLO
Covered theater for musical auditions, mime shows and poetry declamations
Right next to the "Grand Théâtre", the "Petit Théâtre" or odeon was a covered theater dedicated to musical auditions, poetic declamations and mime shows. Well-preserved, it was built during the early years of Sylla's colony (80 BC), by Pompeii's duumvirs, i.e. the city's two "mayors". With a capacity of 1,300 spectators, it was equipped with a roof to ensure excellent acoustics. Note the tufa-sculpted atlantes at the ends of the cavea, at the base of the walls.
