From the airport to the city centre Moscow (Москва)

There are 4 international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO, www.svo.aero/en/main), Vnukovo (VKO, www.vnukovo.ru/en), Domodedovo (DME, www.dme.ru/en) and Zhukowski (ZIA, ww.zia.aero). The fastest way to reach the city is the Moscow Aero-Express train (www.aeroexpress.ru/en), which costs from RUB 500 (which you can take with the Troika) and takes you to various metro stations. The most convenient way is by taxi, which can take you directly to your hotel, but there may be traffic jams (especially during office hours). Book in advance for more comfort (we recommend the kiwitaxi.com website) and expect to pay at least 2,100 RUB. Finally, the cheapest way (from 50 RUB) is the bus with the same disadvantage of depending on the traffic but if you arrive in off-peak hours or in the middle of the night, they are a solid option. The lines are the 308 for DME, the 441 for ZIA, the 949, 948, 851, 817 and H1 for SVO, 611 and 611c for VKO. Be careful though, the buses will drop you off at the nearest metro station, so plan the rest of the trip.

Arrival by train Moscow (Москва)

From France, there are two direct lines to Moscow (both to be booked from www.oui.sncf): the Riviera Express from Nice and the Moscow Express from Paris, and you will be able to enjoy a high standard service for several days. Be careful, both lines cross Belarus and you need a Belarusian transit passport to cross the border

If you wish to travel by train from Moscow, the 9 stations serving the city are under the single operator RZD on the website www.eng.rzd.ru :

Arrival by boat Moscow (Москва)

The North River Station is located next to the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station (line 2). It is from this station that ships from St. Petersburg arrive and those sailing on the Volga leave. All ships look alike, so be sure to look out for the name of your boat, especially since it can move along the quay to let one of its comrades moor. It can also detach and sail to reposition itself.

Public transport Moscow (Москва)

To benefit from the best transport fares and make your journey easier: get a rechargeable Troïka card (50 RUB deposit) at the station counters, terminals or in the electronics shops of the Svyaznoy chain. It offers a promotion on all the city's transport systems: the metro and tram cost 38 RUB, the bus costs 20 RUB. This card also gives access to the Aéroexpress, which connects the city centre and the neighbouring airports, and to the bicycle terminals scattered throughout the streets of the capital. As a small bonus, the card is smart enough to apply the appropriate fare: if you take a metro and tram as part of a single trip within the 90-minute time limit, you will be charged the price of a cheaper 90-minute ticket

Without the card, a one-way ticket costs RUB 55 and Moscow transport is not divided into zones. Transport is free for children under 7 years of age on the basis of one child per accompanying adult.

Hours and rush hours: all transport runs from 5.30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day. Avoid rush hours as much as possible between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the evening.

The Moscow metro (www.mosmetro.ru) is the most suitable form of transport in the city. The metro has free WiFi: to identify yourself for the first time, you must enter your phone number and a code received by SMS. Afterwards, each time you use it, you will have to watch a few minutes of advertising.

For buses, trolleybuses and trams, signage is not very developed. It is recommended that you consult the following English-speaking applications or sites to prepare your routes in advance and not get lost: www.msk.rusavtobus.ru and www.moscowmap.ru. Use the Yandex Transport app to get live transport

Bike, scooters & co Moscow (Москва)

There is a bicycle rental system. Its application is velobike on the Appstore or GooglePlay. It is not yet easy to use for non-Russian speakers and there is still a lack of bike paths.

Electric scooters have also colonized the downtown area of the Russian capital. Its main companies are Delisamokat (www.delisamokat.ru) and Youdrive lite (www.lite.youdrive.today). The advantage of Youdrive is that it is easy to access the rental service, while Delisamokat has scooter stations at every metro station

With a driver Moscow (Москва)

Regulated taxis are recognizable by their light signal on the roof and you can stop them anywhere, or order them from their different companies: Taxi Class at +7 (495) 135-21-21, Novoye Jeltoe Taxi at +7 (495) 940-88-88 etc. They work like in France with a meter, with extras depending on the travel time and the number of kilometres. They are not cheap, count at least 400 RUB

VTC companies are a practical and economical option. Unlike taxis, you can know the fare in advance and there are few overruns. The service is of good quality. We recommend Yandex Taxi, GetTaxi or Wheely for a more luxurious version on the AppStore and GooglePlay

By car Moscow (Москва)

The city has an extensive short-term car rental service (for a trip or a day). Its best known service is again Youdrive: www.youdrive.today. It has the advantage that its users benefit from free parking in the city

If you drive yourself, be careful. Driving is generally nervous and poor road surface quality and signalling defects cause many accidents. Traffic jams are common and massive in Moscow especially on return from work and on Sunday evenings

Concerning parking, there are different parking zones, from 40 to 50 RUB per hour, free on Sundays and public holidays. To find all the information and pay online use the Moscow parking application. This project also has a site, www.parking.mos.ru, which unfortunately is not yet very complete in its English version

Accessibility Moscow (Москва)

The city is not adapted to traffic in pushchairs or wheelchairs, but there is a progression in the new metro stations. It is preferable to order an adapted VTC.
