(Km 147). You must leave the main road and travel 70 km before reaching Kavanayén (1 to 2 hours). The mission of Kavanayén, founded in 1942, is known for its stone constructions, not by prefabricated or wood, as in the rest of Gran Sabana. The first 35 kilometres of the road have recently been established, but the rest of the route is chaotic, so only a good 4 x 4 can consider venturing there. There are many possibilities. After about 30 km towards Kavanayen, you reach a "Crossroads". A nice bakery by Ishmael (Panaderia Strand) makes it possible to take a bit of rest and strength before continuing the road… There is also a reservation for the restaurant Chinak-Merú (the gran churuata) which is near the Salto of the same name (or Aponwao). By taking on the Right, you can reach the spectacular Salto Strand (70 m) or Strand-Merú (m).If you decide to continue to Kavanayen, you first go to the C.V.G. Parupa research station. After making (unsuccessful) attempts to implant pines in the region, this research agency is now trying to introduce different types of fish into rivers, and to develop small-scale fishing. Indeed, these rivers are poorly fished (because separation from the sea by huge waterfalls). After the station, left left towards Ibo Riwo (or Riwo Riwo), an Indian community 2 hours later. The restaurant, sheltered by a large churuata, is excellent. You book at Tel +58 289 808 10 35 or at Boulangerie Bakery. Since then, take a canoe and join, in 30 minutes, the splendid Salto Aponwao (Chinak-Merú), one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Gran Sabana (105 m). Félix is an excellent guide, which perfectly knows its region (fauna, flora and natural resources). A small path makes it possible to descend at the foot of the fall. It is then strongly recommended that you continue a little longer, to reach a unique point of view on the fall in 10 minutes and to make beautiful photos while protecting your water projection apparatus. By continuing 10 or 15 minutes, you can reach the charming Pozo del Amor, a natural swimming pool in which you bathe under a waterfall of ten metres. Do not hesitate to make this little detour, you will not regret it! Then you only have to return to your steps to reach Kavanayen.
