Buddha statue, all in bronze, 34 m high and weighing 202 tons, is located near the monastery

Perched on the Ngong Ping plateau, the Big Buddha, as it's known, is one of Hong Kong's most iconic symbols. Erected in 1993, this majestic bronze statue stands 34 metres high and weighs around 250 tonnes. Depicting Buddha in meditation, with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand resting on his knee, it symbolizes the harmony between man, nature and the cosmos. The statue was last renovated between 2020 and 2022.

Climbing the 268 steps up to the statue is a spiritual (and physical!) experience. At the top, a circular plateau offers a breathtaking 360° view of the surrounding mountains and sea. Inside the Buddha, a museum displays Buddhist relics and information on the Buddha's philosophy. Also on display are small sacred burial niches, where the ashes of the deceased are laid to rest in homage in this place of peace.

Buddha's birthday. Celebrated every year around May, on the 8th day of the4th lunar month, it attracts thousands of devotees and visitors. It's one of the biggest spiritual festivals of the year. On this occasion, grandiose ceremonies are held at the foot of the Great Buddha Tian Tan and in Buddhist temples throughout Hong Kong, including the Po Lin monastery. The faithful come to pour water over Buddha statues in a purifying ritual, light incense and pray for prosperity. A must-see in Hong Kong!
