Kounia-Ourgentch had its hour of glory between the th and th centuries, as the capital of the Shahs kingdom of the kingdom of Khorezm. She was first struck by Mongols in 1221, and a large part of the monuments were destroyed at that time. But the city managed to recover and new buildings, especially religious buildings, were built in the th century. It was then that the hordes of Timur swept over the city which, this time, did not recover.Only a few monuments have resisted the massive destruction of the Timourids. They have been classified as UNESCO World Heritage since July 2005. And the site is a very active pilgrimage site: the various monuments are now connected by a dallé footpath.
