Sad and dreary, you will not want to stay long in Nukus. The administrative capital of the republic of Karakalpakstan is a dusty city with 300,000 inhabitants. It is not very attractive, but it contains a real treasure: the museum of Fine Arts, named Igor Savitsky, after its founder. It houses one of the most beautiful collections of Soviet avant-garde masters as well as a large collection of Karakalpak crafts and Khorezm antiquities. It is advisable to travel from Urengench to Nukus by car and to visit on the way the numerous archaeological sites scattered in the desert such as the fortress of Djampik kala or the necropolis of Mizdakhan.
