Since the early 1970s, Aralsk has no longer been a port city. As a result of cotton cultivation, the Aral Sea has disappeared, leaving Aralsk more than 100 km from the shore. Local initiatives led to the construction of a dike, allowing the water level to rise. Since then, more than a third of the surface area lost to the sea has been recovered. It will still take time for Aralsk to become a port again, if ever, as promised by President Nazarbayev. In the meantime, the desolate scenery of Aralsk's industrial and maritime past is obviously a photogenic treasure that many travelers come to immortalize.
