PEACE AND RECONCILIATION PALACE
A little long and a little pompous, this name is rarely used and Kazakhs prefer to talk about the "Pyramid". Facing the "White House", it is one of Astana's most visible and remarkable architectural structures. Designed by the British Norman Foster and built between 2004 and 2006, its four 62-metre long faces face the four cardinal points and each symbolize a facet of the ideal humanity: friendship, solidarity, peace and tolerance. The primary function of the pyramid, whose peak reaches 77 metres high, is to host international congresses, but it also houses an exhibition centre and an opera house. Its construction is a real feat: the materials used are very sensitive to extreme temperature variations in Astana (from -40°C in winter to +45°C in summer) and the whole building, under the effect of thermal expansion or contraction, has extensions of nearly 30 cm.
Ceci dit le batiment est intéressant et la visite constructive. (guide très sympa et ouvert a la discussion, possibilité de visite en plusieurs langues)
