The cathedral's foundations date back to the 11th century, with the reuse of older tombs. The Moorish arches and the original decoration are of Arab-Norman inspiration, from the kingdom of Sicily where the Arab dynasty of the Aghlabids (from Tunisia) gave an architectural style that will be exported to Gaeta.
