RISERVA NATURALE PADULE ORTI-BOTTAGONE
Read moreThis superb nature reserve is located in Torre del Sale, about 12 kilometres from Piombino, on the road to Vignale. It extends over approximately 92 ha of freshwater ("Bottagone") or saltwater ("Orti") ponds, and is home to more than 200 species of birds, the stars of which are white herons, white storks and geese. The site is one of 117 oases protected by WWF Italy. An ideal spot for birdwatching and beautiful walks in perspective.

Indeed, from the port of Piombino, ferries leave for the islands of the Tuscan archipelago (Elba is only 10 kilometres from the coast), as well as for Sardinia and Corsica. The two main companies are Moby (www.mobylines.fr) and Toremar (www.toremar.it). They both serve Portoferraio, the "capital" of the island of Elba, in about an hour.

Read moreWant to take off? About twelve kilometres north of Piombino, the town of Baratti offers a long and beautiful beach of fine sand. As a bonus, the island of Elba and the bay of Piombino in panorama. It is easily accessible by crossing a shaded pine forest; a good place for a picnic after swimming in clear water. The beach is free and open access - which is not so frequent in Italy -, parking is not free, and beware, there are many controls in high season!
