Bien que nommé forteresse nouvelle, le bâtiment n'en date pas moins du début du 17e Siècle et a été commandité par les Medicis. Sa situation au milieu d'un plan d'eau lui confère un charme particulier. Maintenant parc public, il offre une belle vue de la ville mais ne possède quasiment plus de monuments d'époque.
