A city with deep multi-ethnic roots, where immigrants and Jews enjoyed the same rights as the inhabitants, two centuries before the French Revolution, Livorno has never ceased to mark its difference. In the 16th century, the Medici wanted to extend their influence and, with the help of the architect Buontalenti, transformed this fishing village into an "ideal city". Livorno quickly became the first port in Tuscany. The first bathing establishments appeared in Livorno towards the middle of the 19th century. The Naval Academy was built on the sea and has been training all the officers of the Italian Navy since 1881.
