GIOSTRA DEL SARACINO

Twice a year, in June and September, Piazza Grande becomes the theatre of the Giostra del Saracino (literally the "Buckwheat Joust"), whose origins date back to 1200. To the sound of fanfares, Arezzo plunges into a chivalrous era of yesteryear with this medieval equestrian tournament that pits the four districts of the city against each other. This reconstruction, in Renaissance costumes, is a great show! A galloping rider must aim his spear at a rotating scarecrow in a high-pitched atmosphere. The city is in turmoil.
