Around Fantiscritti, in the heart of Carrara's marble basins, lies an underground quarry known as cavano 84, , which can be visited with this agency. A minibus takes you into the bowels of the mountain, until you reach a veritable cathedral of marble (15 metres high!). The visit may seem short, but the guides are competent - some of them speak French very well - and you'll come away knowing everything there is to know about marble-cutting techniques.
