ABBAZIA SANTI SALVATORE E CIRINO
In the small village of Abbadia a Isola, near Monteriggioni, a beautiful Cistercian abbey in the Romanesque style
Just a stone's throw from Monteriggioni, this beautiful Cistercian abbey was built in the mid-12th century on a pre-existing church along the Via Francigena. The interior features three naves, each ending in an apse. Works of art include a magnificent polyptych painted in 1476 by the Sienese painter Sano di Pietro. The site has attracted a number of film-makers: Bertolucci for Stolen Beauty, Anthony Minghella for The English Patient, and Ridley Scott for Gladiator.
