Superb museum right on Piazza del Duomo which houses more than 400 works by the great Italian artists of the 20th century.

In the heart of Milan, the 20th Century Museum is the city's latest cultural flagship, opened in December 2010. Located in Piazza del Duomo, in the Palazzo dell'Arengario, an imposing rationalist architecture of the 1920s, 8,200square meters of art are displayed on three floors overlooking the square. More than 400 of the most representative works of the artistic currents of the last century enchant the visitor, who cannot help but stop to meditate for a few moments in each room. From Futurism to Arte Povera, Balla, Boccioni, de Chirico, Morandi, Sironi, Carrà, Guttuso, Manzoni answer the call. But also foreigners like Braque, Picasso and Kounellis. An entire room is reserved for Lucio Fontana. His Soffitto Spaziale (Space Ceiling), created in 1956 for the ceiling of a hotel on the island of Elba, is something transcendent. Thanks to the huge windows that open onto the square, the works dialogue directly with the outside, as if they were meant to be "accessible to all". Thus Pellizza da Volpedo's Fourth State seems to move directly towards the carefree walker of today's Milan.

The bookshop and the restaurant are the meeting places of the museum. Lucio Fontana's neon sign represents a final embrace of the city. Reflecting the feverish cultural dynamism of Milan, the Permanent Collection is essentially the story of several private collections that have been assembled thanks to the generosity and passion for art of many private collectors.
