Travel Guide Qalaat Maroun

A few kilometres north of Tibnin, the village of Deir Kifa has kept on a hill in the footsteps of a cross-fortification: Qal Maroun.The castle was raised by the Franks in the th century and reconstructed by the Arabs. In square form, the citadel covers a large area of 10 000 m ² surrounded by a wall and semi circular towers partially destroyed. Unfortunately, the site is only a confusing pile of ruins long crushed and cultivated. Some stones have been reused by the population to build their fence. After the departure of the Franks, this site was occupied and probably enlarged by the Ottomans. The fortress retains some tanks, sometimes carved in the rock, ramparts and semicircular towers.
