Rashaya, which was destroyed by the French in 1925 during the Druze revolt, is home to a fortress where the Chehab emirs lived in the 18th century. Transformed into a prison by the French authorities, you can visit the cells where President Béchara el Khoury, Prime Minister Riad el Solh and various ministers were detained by the French authorities from 11 November 1943 in response to a unilateral declaration of independence. The unanimous disapproval led to the release of the prisoners on 22 November, which is since the date of the national holiday. The citadel is currently occupied by the Lebanese army.
