It is the administrative center of northern Fiji and, as such, an important transit point. It is home to a predominantly Indo-Fijian population. They rent land to grow sugarcane, whose fields invade the landscape. Labasa's town center, consisting mainly of the main Nasekula Road, is relatively well-developed but not of tourist interest. There's no need to spend a night in Labasa, or to plan a detour to visit it. A quick trip to the local market and Korovatu Beach near the center (no immediate proximity to the sea) will suffice.
