A major urban area, Accra is the country's main industrial and commercial center. Commercial and agricultural outlets (primarily cocoa exports), textiles, the timber industry and the chemical industry are the main activities that sustain Accra and the surrounding region. More than ever, Accra is a capital that attracts the vast majority of the country's workforce, including those from Kumasi, the second largest city. In fact, many Ghanaians have one foot in their home town and one in Accra. For the traveler, it's an obligatory stopover, and if you want to visit the various regions of the country, chances are you won't just be staying in the capital. And that's just as well, because despite its noisy, polluted side, Accra has a lot to offer.
