With an area of 4,383 km², and sharing 15% of its surface with the W Regional Park (closed to the public for an indefinite period in 2022), the village of Banikoara has about 35,000 inhabitants. The market, where Fulani and Dendi merchants mix, takes place very regularly, about every three days. But the commune is best known for being the leading cotton producer in Benin... since 1963! Even if the local economy also relies for a good part on agriculture (cereals and legumes in particular) and cattle and poultry breeding. A nice stop in the North-East of the country in any case.
