In the heart of Semarang's harbor, just a stone's throw from the city center (about 5 km), on the picturesque quays of Tambak Lorok, you'll have the opportunity to admire the splendid "pinisi", Bugi sailing ships that seem to have escaped from the pages of a Joseph Conrad novel. These old-fashioned schooners, witnesses to a bygone era, were built in the 19th century by the Dutch colonial authorities for the export of sugar and a myriad of agricultural products from the fertile lands of Central Java.
