Few tourists know it, but Semarang is the capital of Central Java. Situated on the north coast between Cirebon and Surabaya, this large port city (1.8 million inhabitants, many of them Chinese) is not really a tourist destination. The only real attraction is the Chinese temple of Gedung Batu. In 1816, it was visited by Arthur Rimbaud, who, after enlisting in the Dutch army, deserted after a few days and returned to Europe on a Scottish ship. Semarang is divided into two main parts. The old town on the coastal plain and the new town in the southern hills of Candi. Pasar Johar, Jl Pemuda and Simpang Lima are the city's busiest thoroughfares and crossroads. Simpang Lima is extremely popular with its cinemas and shopping arcades.
