Lakes are numerous in these mountains and play a major role in the ecological balance of the region. Legii Lake is the preferred place of laying for many migratory birds (bird stocks were created around the lakes Geaca, Ştiucii and Legii). Some lakes are of artificial origin and are used to produce hydraulic energy (Fântânele, Floroiu and Tarniţa). They are beautiful leisure areas. You can practise fishing and sailing there. The region of Cluj also has some salty lakes, close to the salt reserves formerly exploited (Cojocna, Sic…).
