Discover KINGSTON

Sprawling capital, cradle of reggae, bustling capital where virtually all the island's business is done, Kingston acts as a magnet for Jamaicans from all over the island, who are experiencing a major rural exodus that is swelling the capital's already overcrowded ghettos. Today, Kingston's urban community is home to 1.2 million inhabitants, or 25% of the island's total population. The largest English-speaking city in the Caribbean, Kingston is a tough, no-holds-barred city. It's a secretive, complex city that doesn't give itself up easily to visitors. The luxury of New Kingston rubs shoulders with the misery of the ghettos in the western and central parts of the city. Whatever the case, visitors won't really see it if they come to discover its interesting museums, restaurants and live or sound system evenings. A visit to Trench Down at Bob Marley's Yard is also a good way to get to know this community.
