In the middle of the island stands proudly Mount Hallasan, South Korea's highest point. At a height of 1950 metres, this dormant volcano, a Unesco World Heritage site, is a delight in every season. Its slopes are clothed in beautiful vegetation, with abundant trees, royal azaleas and alpine flora... No fewer than 1,800 plant species and 4,000 animal species share this little corner of paradise. To preserve this ecosystem, certain trails are closed on a rotating basis, to give nature time to reclaim its rights. At its summit, this sacred mountain is home to the Baengnokdam crater lake, or "White Deer Lake". Four hiking trails are available to climb Mount Halla and marvel at the splendour of the landscape shaped by eruptions thousands of years ago.The Gwaneumsa trail leads to the summit. It offers the best view, and halfway up, you can discover the Guringul lava cavern. The Seongpanak trail also allows you to climb the entire volcano. Its gentler slopes are ideal for shorter walkers. Eorimok trail: this does not reach the summit, but is easy.Yeongsil trail: this is the shortest trail, but does not lead to the summit. There are refuges for each of these trails, but drinking water is not available everywhere, so bring your own supplies!
