VILLAGE DE BANYUMULEK

7 km south of Mataram, the village of Banyumulek is a treasure trove of pottery craftsmanship. Once destined for domestic and religious use, production includes jars, pots and jugs, notably the "thieves' jug", which fills from the bottom and never tips over. These ancestral techniques are passed down from mother to daughter. The methods used are still ancient (no potter's wheel) and favor local clay and natural colorants.
