Water temple at Tampaksiring, with sacred springs and purifying waters, where religious bathing is permitted.

Tirta Empul means in French - approximately - temple of the holy water. It is said that the basins collecting the sacred waters of Tirta Empul date back to 962... These springs are considered as sacred and purifying waters. Their mythical origin goes back to Indra who is said to have made the springs gush out to make the famous elixir of immortality flow. Thanks to this elixir, Indra's army was able to defeat the army of King Mayadanawa. The waters have the reputation of being magical, and every year thousands of pilgrims come to purify themselves in its pools and make offerings to the deities. During the week corresponding to the full moon day of the 4th month of the year, the barongs of the neighbouring villages come here to receive the lustrous waters to be purified and strengthened in their magic power. The devotional spectacle in the temple pools is both joyful and solemn. This place is particularly sacred and bathing other than religious is not encouraged. You can purify yourself if you wish! Many tourists come to bathe in its holy waters. Be careful, however, women in their menstrual period are not allowed to enter the pool... Above the sacred spring stands the former residence of Sukarno. At the exit, you will have to make your way between the hundreds of stalls selling for the most part the same thing at $1, a bargain price! And as for all the temples, be careful with your outfit. A sarong (a cloth to tie) can be lent to you.

A visiter absolument!!
