STÄDELSCHES KUNSTINSTITUT (STÄDEL MUSEUM)
The Frankfurt Museum of Fine Arts houses collections of exceptional works of inestimable value dating back to the century.
More commonly known as Städel after its founder, this museum is Frankfurt's most famous museum of fine arts. It has exceptional collections of works of art. All the trends in European painting since the 14th century are present in this invaluable museum. The German masters (Dürer, Holbein) rub shoulders with their Flemish, Dutch or French contemporaries. 14th century Italian painting is very well represented. The chronological order is dedicated to the most esteemed painters of the 20th century, both German (through the movements Der Blaue Reiter or Die Brücke) and foreign. The basement is dedicated to modern art and the works of contemporary artists (Giacometti, Tápiès, Picasso, Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Reinhardt, Francis Bacon...). The museum houses some of the most beautiful collections in Germany and even in the world. It is worth a visit, if only to discover - or see again - an absolute masterpiece. For the first time in the world history of painting, the museum is exhibiting a painting showing the first example of a "snapshot" in painting, a scene taken "on the spot", "in action" as we do nowadays with a mobile phone or a camera, in the image of a snapshot. It is Samson's Blinding by the Philistines, painted by Rembrandt in 1636. Until the creation of this painting, all the artists' models were still. His work therefore marks a turning point and constitutes a cornerstone in the history of painting. As you will see, the picture is quite realistic. The work is almost chilling, as if you were a spectator of a scene unfolding before your eyes.
The second masterpiece on display is one of Jérôme Bosch's paintings, Ecce homo (presentation of Christ to the people). Observe the unkind expressions of the people in question...
The museum exhibits wonders by Rubens, Botticelli, Vermeer, Poussin, Renoir, Cézanne... A must-see museum, it organizes guided tours.
The Holbein restaurant offers good traditional and international cuisine (including sushi) on the ground floor. Its frame with large bay windows and walls enhanced with paintings is superb. Terrace on sunny days.
L'expo Bonnard Matisse est vraiment intéressante.
Its temporary exhibitions are those of the Schirn moments of great interest and its permanent collection is exceptional.
If you have the means: the restaurant Holbein' S next to the west wing of the museum but welcoming also outside is a fine example of imaginative international cuisine served effectively in a remarkable modern setting.
