RUSSISCHE GEDÄCHTNISKIRCHE - RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF REMEMBRANCE
Beautiful Russian Orthodox church built in 1912-1913 as a place of worship by Leipzig's local Russian Orthodox community.
Leipzig is home to one of Germany's oldest and most beautiful Russian Orthodox churches. Dedicated to Saint Alexis, it is a local replica of the Renaissance Church of the Resurrection in Moscow. It's a real eye-catcher. The building is located close to Deutscher Platz. It features a white central spire and a flaky roof topped by a bulb. The Russian Memorial Church was built here in 1912-1913, the same year as the Battle of the Nations monument. Its designers' aim was to celebrate in style the 100th anniversary of the triumph of the Prussian-Russian alliance over Napoleon's armies. Since then, the church has been a favorite place of worship for the local Russian Orthodox community. It is also famous for its sumptuous iconostasis.
