Integrated into the province of Azerbaijan Gharbi, north of Oroumiye and at 1 300 m above sea level, Maku is located about kilometres from Bazargan, Iran-Turkish border post. With its 40   000 inhabitants, the city built in the heart of a beautiful mountain massif displays a mixture of influences. The proximity of Armenia and Azerbaijan prints its mark to a diverse population. Azerbaijanis of the Muslim and Turkish faiths are alongside the Armenian Christians, who have been in the region for a very long time. The nearby church of Saint-Thadée (Ghara Kelisa) is one of the oldest in Iran. Historically, the area will depend on the ourartéen kingdom (foreshadowing Armenia present) between the IX and life   centuries B.C. Rival of the Assyria, the Urartu will finally be destroyed by the Medes.
