House presenting the work of 2 great architects with the Victorian houses of Astor Street.

Built in 1891-1892 by architect Louis Sullivan with the help of the young Frank Lloyd Wright, this house represents the break with Victorian architecture and the beginning of the modern architectural era. From the outside, it is easy to appreciate the differences between the work of the two great architects and the Victorian houses on Astor Street: the architectural elements of the Victorian era, such as the curves and multiple details on the façades, have given way to sober and symmetrical, straight and geometric lines.

The drawings of the entrance door can be found inside, on the mosaic facing the entrance, as well as on the wooden balustrade on the first floor. The interior is dominated by a large three-storey skylight, around which the oak staircase is built. Notice the details of the woodwork as you go up to the first floor; they are found on the wooden slats that let the light through. We have to imagine what the interplay of shadow and light created by evening light must have been like when the buildings to the west did not exist. The large arches create a unity between the pieces, a phenomenon often found in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, who became the founder of the important Prairie School of Architecture. This inspired the simple and refined lines of the Madlener House, built ten years later by Schmidt and Garden.

Je n'ai malheureusement pas pu visiter la maison mais le quartier est superbe. A voir absolument ! Old Town est l'un des plus anciens quartiers de la ville. On y trouve des habitations de type victorien et une église ayant survécu au grand incendie de 1871.
