Chapleau has a population of just under 2,000, working primarily at the Tembec sawmill and the Canadian Pacific Railway. Although the railroad was built in the area in 1885, the area was already attracting workers and immigrants prior to that date, as the Hudson's Bay Company had established a fur trading post on the great Missinaibi Lake in 1777. Today, the community is known for the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve, which covers no less than 7,000 square kilometres. Another natural site worth visiting is Potholes Provincial Park and its giant potholes.
