Named after George Carmack, a pioneer in the search for gold in the Klondike, the town is part of the Little Salmon First Nations territory. For many years, the town was an important fueling station for sternwheelers on the Yukon River. It was also - and still is - a roadhouse for those venturing on the Whitehorse-Dawson City route. There is a Northern Tutchone Cultural Interpretation Center on site as well as accommodations (hotels, campgrounds), restaurants and tourist information. Also worth seeing, north of Carmacks, are the mythical Five Fingers Rapids.
