It is a village located on an island at the junction of the Mackenzie and Liard Rivers, both of which traditionally served as a trade route for the Hudson's Bay Company and the local Aboriginal people, the Dene. It is the starting point for exploring the Nahanni country. Before heading to the national park by plane or boat, you can enjoy the cultural attractions of Fort Simpson: the cabin of Albert Faille, one of the first pioneers, explorers, trappers and prospectors of the Canadian North, or the Fort Simpson Heritage Park, which is the original site of the first trading post established in 1801.
